First flight of European Black Swan cargo drone ...

The remotely piloted cargo drone needs 400m of runway with 65kts for take off

The remotely piloted cargo drone needs 400m of runway with 65kts for take off and is designed to carry a payload of up to 350kg with a range of 2500km.

The company has raised $62m for the development according to Crunchbase, with customers including global delivery firm DHL. The successful flight test validates the company's licensed cargo drone technology for commercial flights in Europe, set to begin later this year, although the original plan was for commercial flights in 2022.

The drone is aimed at serving industries such as e-commerce, pharma, spare parts, and perishables with a fast and cost-effective solution to meet evolving consumer needs.

Dronamics is the first cargo drone airline to obtain operational license in Europe and has signed two manufacturing agreements to produce the Black Swan at scale in Europe and Australia as well as joining the UK's first medical drone distribution network. It has also announced partnerships with Zero Petroleum and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions to adopt fossil-free alternatives to power the Black Swan's engine.

European manufacturing of the cargo drone will be handled by Cotesa in Germany, a manufacturer of high quality composite fibre components for aviation and automotive engineering. It has more than 400 employees at three locations, in Mittweida and Mochau as well as Changzhou in China. Cotesa develops and manufactures customized components and assemblies with a focus on complex carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components such as profiles and stiffeners, multi-dimensional GRP sandwich structures and hybrid components such as drive shafts.

"Cotesa is proud to be a partner of Dronamics and support the next step of the development of their offering. Based on our long experience and competence in the manufacturing of components and assemblies for civil aviation, Cotesa is excited to partner with such an innovator in the air mobility space," said Christian Bartsch, CEO of Cotesa.
